Two pairs of Apple wireless earbuds, two different designs...

Apple AirPods Pro 2

Bluetooth: 5.3
Active noise-cancelling: Yes
Spatial Audio: Yes
Battery life: 30hrs (buds: 6hrs; case: 24hrs)
Weight: 5.4g (per earbud)

The AirPods Pro 2 are Apple's first in-ear pair to earn five stars from us. And you can see why – they sound great, cancel plenty of noise, and have Apple's trademark user-friendliness (for iOS users anyway; to Android users they're considerably less friendly). Definitely a step up on the standard pair.

For

  • Clear, detailed and powerful sound
  • Excellent noise-cancelling
  • Longer battery life
  • Smooth, intuitive use with iOS devices
  • Updated ANC features

Against

  • Many features restricted to iOS devices only
  • Updated USB-C case model identical in sound to original

Apple AirPods 3

Bluetooth: 5.0
Active noise-cancelling: No
Spatial Audio: Yes
Battery life: 30hrs (buds: 6hrs; case: 24hrs)
Weight: 4.3g (per earbud)

The AirPods 3 are a little less appealing. They lack noise cancellation, but do support Spatial Audio, which is a real plus. And they match the Pro 2 for battery life. But they don't sound anywhere near as good, and don't have ear tips to help with fit, so won't be for everyone. If you can, try before you buy.

For

  • Spatial audio support is a real bonus
  • Balanced, clear and detailed sound
  • Strong battery life

Against

  • Beaten for transparency
  • Still no on-bud volume adjustment
  • Fit won't be for everyone

Apple calls AirPods the ‘most popular wireless headphones in the world’ for good reason: these little buds are everywhere. Chances are if you’ve got an Apple device, you’ve thought about getting a pair of AirPods. But which one? Because not only are there different models to choose from, there are different generations, too.

The AirPods 3 are Apple’s latest traditional wireless earbuds, while the AirPods Pro 2 (2022) are Apple’s flagship noise-cancelling buds that come with a different design, feature set and price tag.

Below you'll find everything you need to know about which pair of AirPods are right for you...

  • AirPods Pro 2 (2022) vs AirPods Pro: what are the differences?
  • After a cheaper pair? Check out the AirPods 3 vs AirPods Pro (1st Gen)

AirPods Pro 2 (2022) vs AirPods 3: Price

AirPods Pro 2 vs AirPods 3: which are better? (3)

The AirPods 3 originally retailed for £169 ($179, AU$279), and that’s about what they still cost today. The AirPods Pro 2 launched at the same £249 ($249, AU$399) as their predecessors, but since they launched with a USB-C case in place of the Lightning one, they have dropped to £229 in the UK (US and Australia prices remain the same).

Yes, the AirPods 3 are cheaper on paper but remember the Pro 2 do bring active noise-cancellation (ANC) and a different design and chipset to the party.

**Winner: AirPods 3**

AirPods Pro 2 vs AirPods 3: Battery life

AirPods Pro 2 vs AirPods 3: which are better? (4)

The AirPods 3 have great battery life, offering up to six hours on a single charge with just the buds and increasing that to 30 hours with the charging case. The AirPods Pro 2 (2022) match the AirPods 3’s battery life, offering up the same six and 30 hours respectively.

Of course, the AirPods Pro 2 (2022) manage this great battery life with noise-canceling activated, making the battery on the new Pros the winner here.

**Winner: AirPods Pro 2**

AirPods Pro 2 vs AirPods 3: Design

The AirPods 3 have the traditional look and feel of Apple’s classic headphones, while the AirPods Pro 2 come with interchangeable tips and look and feel more like your average wireless earbud, though the Pros do retain their stems that competitors like the Sony WF-1000XM4 go without.

The AirPods 3 don’t have swappable silicone tips like many earbuds do that you can change depending on the size of your ears. Instead theirs is a one-size-fits-all approach, which, in our experience, doesn't actually fit all. The Pros come with those familiar swappable silicone tips, which we found were extremely useful in finding the perfect fit for you. Plus, the new AirPods Pro come with an added fourth XS tip.

In addition to the force sensor you’ll see on both pairs of AirPods, AirPods Pro 2 (2022) also have a touch-capacitive layer on their stems that you can swipe up and down on to control volume, which is a pretty solid quality-of-life improvement, considering how responsive touch control is.

Both buds come with IPX4 water- and sweat-resistance, while their charging cases have MagSafe and Qi support for wireless charging. On top of this, the AirPods Pro 2 (2022) case is compatible with Apple Watch chargers, and has a built-in speaker, Precision Finding support for locating a lost case, and a built-in lanyard.

**Winner: AirPods Pro 2**

AirPods Pro 2 vs AirPods 3: Features

AirPods Pro 2 vs AirPods 3: which are better? (6)

A number of AirPods Pro 2 features are accessible on AirPods 3. Support for Apple Spatial Audio as well as Dolby Atmos; dynamic head-tracking; adaptive EQ; Audio Sharing (the ability to play audio simultaneously through two sets of AirPods); and Auto-pause are all features you can enjoy on AirPods Pro 2 as well as AirPods 3.

The biggest difference is the AirPods Pro 2 (2022) sport Apple’s brand new H2 chip that yields massive improvements to active noise-cancelling, sound quality and battery life. With the H2 chip and optimised acoustic vent and mic placement on AirPods Pro 2 (2022), Apple is promising up to twice the noise-cancelling ability over the original AirPods Pro.

In our testing, we found noise-cancelling on the new AirPods Pro was indeed greatly improved over what was already an effective noise-cancelling system on the original AirPods Pro. With the new Pros, you won't have any trouble eliminating background noise with ANC on, whether that's the soft hush of background office chatter or the bass-heavy roar of an oncoming train.

The AirPods Pro 2 also offer an extra sonic feature called Adaptive Transparency, which allows them to minimise loud sounds as they appear and help reduce their impact on your listening experience.

**Winner: AirPods Pro 2**

AirPods Pro 2 vs AirPods 3: Sound quality

AirPods Pro 2 vs AirPods 3: which are better? (7)

AirPods 3 sound good with a balanced, clear and detailed sound. But unsurprisingly, the Pros sound even better.

They're weighty and dynamic without sacrificing detail or tonal balance. Plus they have a wonderful way with voices. Listening to almost anything on AirPods Pro 2 will offer up an excellent listening experience, thanks to a clean, organised audio presentation.

The AirPods Pro were Apple's best-sounding wireless earbuds, and now, the AirPods Pro 2 take that title, offering up premium sound quality that outclasses the cheaper original AirPods line and even manages to go toe-to-toe with other wireless earbud heavyweights on the market.

Apple’s best-sounding wireless earbuds don’t necessarily mean the best-sounding wireless earbuds overall, though. While the AirPods Pro 2 do impressively manage to make the Sony WF-1000XM4s sound lightweight in comparison, buds like Bose's QC Earbuds II, though pricier, do sound subtler and more balanced.

**Winner: AirPods Pro 2**

AirPods Pro 2 vs AirPods 3: the verdict

If you don’t care much about active noise-cancelling, the AirPods 3 are a solid option, especially if you prefer the original AirPods fit over the AirPods Pro. Plus, AirPods 3 are cheaper, making them the value pick.

If the price differential doesn’t bother you, you care about noise-cancelling, or you simply like the fit and want a jump in sound quality, then the new Pro 2 model is the way to go for most Apple fans.

And while the AirPods Pro 2 sound a bit louder and fuller, the AirPods 3 are surprisingly comparable in sound quality given their much lower price.

Do AirPods 2 or 3 have better sound quality? ›

They're pleasingly tonally neutral and low-level dynamic shifts are handled admirably, even if we prefer a number of AirPods alternatives for their better performance. Apple hasn't stood still in the sound department: the AirPods 3 deliver a sonic step up from the AirPods 2.

AirPods Pro 2 vs AirPods Pro: Audio and calling performance

There's better stereo imaging, increased fidelity, and richer, more powerful bass response. They also now offer personalized Spatial Audio, though that hasn't produced a huge change in performance in our testing so far.

Which AirPods are the most comfortable? ›

Out of the four current models of AirPods, I recommend the AirPods Pro 2 the most because they fit almost every type of ear, they are comfortable to wear, and they include all of the best and latest features that Apple has to offer in headphones.

Why AirPods 2 is better than Pro? ›

The Pro also have an easier-to-use control scheme and feel much more stable in the ear. However, the non-intrusive fit of the AirPods 2 may be more comfortable for some people, and they charge much quicker.

Are AirPods Pro 2nd gen worth it? ›

Apple AirPods Pro (2nd Generation) Wireless Earbuds with USB-C Charging. VERDICT: Apple made only incremental improvements to its latest noise-canceling earbuds, but that's OK: They were already great. There's not an urgent need to upgrade, but if you don't yet own a pair, they're worth the splurge.

Is AirPods 3 good enough? ›

These earphones are fine enough, but the main reason to buy them is if you love the old ones and want more of the same with slight improvements. The fact is that plenty of other (cheaper) true wireless earphones don't suffer the same drawbacks as the AirPods.

Are AirPods 2 Pro worth it? ›

Yes, the AirPods Pro 2 is a worthy upgrade over the Pro 1 due to superior sound quality and up to 2x more effective noise cancelling. Those reasons alone are worth the upgrade, in my honest opinion. Also, the latest version has a USB-C charging case instead of lightning.

Which AirPods are the best for noise cancelling? ›

Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency mode work best when your AirPods Pro fit well. If you have AirPods Pro (2nd generation) and the latest version of iOS or iPadOS, you can also use Adaptive Audio, which adjusts noise-control settings based on your surroundings.

Are AirPods 3 noise cancelling? ›

A key reason for this is the AirPods 3's lack of active noise cancellation (ANC). Without the noise-canceling feature, the non-Pro AirPods are able to retain power more efficiently. Turning off Spatial Audio, which only works with select Apple Music media files, helps just as much.

What is the best Gen of Airpod pros? ›

What are the best Apple AirPods overall? Apple's wireless earbuds and headphones are just getting better and better, but the AirPods Pro 2 are still the best Apple AirPods you can buy. The buds are equipped with Apple's H2 chip, USB-C charging, a new adaptive audio mode and more.

Is there a big difference between AirPods Pro and Pro 2? ›

The 2nd generation sound a little warmer than the 1st generation and can reproduce better low bass. Their ANC also does a significantly better job of blocking out background noise across the spectrum. Additionally, they have a longer continuous battery life, though they're one extra charge short of their predecessor.

Is there a major difference between AirPods Pro and AirPods Pro 2? ›

While the 2019 AirPods Pro offer five hours of playback in the earbuds and another 19 hours from the case, totalling 24 hours, the Pro 2 take that to six and 24 hours, totalling 30 hours – and that's with noise cancelling activated.

Do AirPods 3 have noise cancelling? ›

The 3rd Gen has minimal audio difference from the 2nd Gen pros, and yes, no noise cancellation. They're more money so you can flex on people, really not worth the money at all. I'd say just get the 2 Gen Pros, they're $100 less, comfortable in the ear, great noise cancellation, and still excellent audio quality.

Are 3rd gen AirPods good? ›

3rd gen AirPods are great, but fit poorly for some

LOVE the sound. LOVE the technology that makes these so very much better than previous AirPods. The head tracking, the battery life, the design of the part that goes into the ear, and so much more.

    Are AirPods 3 comfortable? ›

The Apple AirPods 3rd generation are decently comfortable for most people. The buds are bulkier than previous models, which can hurt your inner ear after a while.
