The overall purpose of this job is to provide systems administration, technical support and continuous improvement of Historic England’s mission critical on-premises and cloud-based computing and hosting infrastructure, including Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365 cloud services. As part of a highly skilled and motivated engineering team delivering IT infrastructure services, you will be experienced in a wide range of Microsoft enterprise and server infrastructure technologies. Engage with customers through various channels, capturing incident and request information, maintaining tickets, and providing customer updates.

What you will be doing

Manage, administer and upgrade core enterprise technologies that underpin Historic England’s core IT infrastructure and cloud services to its customers. The technologies and products in scope include the following:

  • Windows Server OS (2012, 2016, 2019, 2022), On Prem AD and AAD (Entra) management

  • On Prem and Azure VM management (using Azure Arc as a central system)

  • Azure and On Prem Storage management

  • Backups and backup monitoring/data restorations, including support Druva and Commvault cloud backup solutions

  • Working alongside our 3rd party SOC using Azure Sentinel to manage infrastructure security

  • Microsoft Multi-Factor Authentication and self-service password reset

  • Microsoft Exchange Online admin

  • Microsoft SharePoint Online admin

  • Microsoft Teams admin, including Microsoft Teams voice administration

  • Microsoft Teams Power Apps, Power Bi & Power Automate

  • OneDrive administration

  • Microsoft Intune for endpoint management

  • SQL Server administration

Update all incidents in a regular, accurate and timely manner, escalating incidents when required to ensure a quick resolution and customer expectations are met.

Automate administration activities (e.g. performance tuning, data management) where possible to ensure consistency and repeatability.

Provide on-call systems support on a rota basis for weekends, bank holidays and other out of hours cover.

Update and maintain the technical knowledgebase and associated systems documentation to ensure that all team members have detailed knowledge of the systems to hand at all times.

Monitor and report on Azure and Microsoft 365 service and licence usage and provide recommendations on changes to infrastructure to optimise use of these services from a commercial and service perspective.

Provide technical consultancy to IMT and the business as required to ensure both can make decisions-based on the best possible information.

Ensure that major and emergency changes to the ICT Infrastructure have been assessed for impact and properly planned, tested and documented prior to being released into the ‘Live’ environment to minimise disruption to customers.

Undertake the introduction of new technology and systems in a controlled and auditable fashion.This includes assisting the work of the IMT Development and Project Teams to ensure that service expectations and licencing requirements are met. Ensure that agreed and signed-off service support documents are in place prior to going ‘Live’.

Keep accurate records of approved hardware, software/software versions, builds and licenses (that are available for release) and ensure that all physical copies are securely stored in a Definitive Media Library.

Identify risks and vulnerabilities to the availability of systems and be proactive in ensuring that the capacity and performance of systems stays ahead of demand to ensure that systems perform to levels of availability, reliability, maintainability, serviceability and security.

Implement and enforce IT security policies, processes and standards using access and risk management processes to ensure the integrity, confidentiality and availability of corporate IT systems and digital information, and that Historic England is upholding its obligations as a data custodian.

Proactively interrogate systems to ensure that capacity is managed on a forward-looking basis in conjunction with IMT colleagues and business representative to actively plan IT capacity to keep pace with demand and to oversee improvements.

Maintain an awareness of technology advancements and best practices that support the technologies under scope.

Who we are looking for

  • Experience of managing and delivering IT data centre enterprise services to SLA’s

  • Practical working experience of Microsoft cloud technologies, including Azure and Microsoft 365 services

  • Understanding of ITIL best practice framework

  • Operational administrative and support experience managing on prem data centres and cloud deployments of Windows Server, Hyper-V, DNS/DHCP, Active Directory, Group Policy & use of Powershell

  • A deep knowledge of IT technologies and issues

  • Able to work with people in a variety of roles, different levels and with third party contract staff

  • Takes ownership of issues and be prepared to see them through to resolution with minimum disruption to the customer
