Valve released a fresh upgrade to Proton Experimental to get more games like Gears 5, Overwatch 2 and Phasmophobia working better on Linux and Steam Deck.
This update was released July 7th and here's what changed:
- Fixed game stutter in Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris.
- Fixed keyboard input registering with a delay and getting stuck in Wild Hearts.
- Fixed Escape from Monkey Island getting minimized on a mouse click.
- Fixed Overwatch 2 stopping to register controller inputs after an online match has started.
- Implemented English speech recognition for Phasmophobia.
- Fixed Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition failing to launch after a recent game update.
- Fixed Microsoft Flight Simulator crashing in accessibility settings.
- Fixed a few Proton 8.0 regressions:
- Logging in online in Gears 5 works again.
- Doom Eternal no longer crashes with ray-tracing enabled on AMDVLK / Nvidia.

How to change your Proton version:
Steam Deck:
- Pick a game in your Libraryand head to the little cog icon on the right.
- Click Properties, then Compatibility on the left.
- Make sure the tickbox is done, then select Proton Experimentalfrom the dropdown.
On a Linux desktop:
- Right click a game, go to Properties.
- Compatibility on the left.
- Make sure the tickbox is done, then select Proton Experimentalfrom the dropdown.

I got Gears 5 in a bundle with a bunch of games that I was much more interested in, so I wasn't bothered that it didn't work. If it works now I might give it a go at some point. It's a chonker download, though.

I had fun with it. As far as a game goes it's an average shooter, but the character writing is great.
