Barrow Covid-19 Mobile Testing Unit Closure

In line with Central Government policy, Cumbria County Council has announced that all free symptomatic and asymptomatic testing sites for COVID-19 must close.

In-person and mobile testing sites were set up at the height of the pandemic, but after the release of the government’s ‘Living with COVID-19’ plan, they will all be taken out of service by the end of the month – some closing earlier than this.

Two sites that have already been confirmed to be closed are the mobile testing units at Ambleside Rothay Holme and Barrow Waterside, with both sites closing from Monday March 7.

Everyone will still be able to access free tests until March 31 – including online orders. After April 1, free lateral flow testing (LFT) will no longer be available to the general public and businesses. Certain occupational groups will continue to have access to free testing and these are likely to include social care staff and high-risk groups, such as those with weakened immune systems.

Cumbria Public Health Director Colin Cox said: ‘Firstly I would like to say a huge thank you to all the amazing testing teams who have worked at these sites throughout the pandemic. Cumbria will be forever grateful to you for the work you have done to protect our communities.

“I’m sure for many the closure of testing sites will look like the end of the pandemic, but it’s not, it’s just the next step in learning to live with COVID-19.

“The virus is still circulating and testing will still be part of daily life in the future – we will just access it differently than before.

“It is important to note that some sites will be closing earlier than March 31, but once we have confirmed the dates for each site, we will update the public and our website accordingly, so please keep an eye out for updates. day.

“Although testing sites are set to close, it could still be a few weeks or even months before all equipment at individual sites is removed. We remain in discussion with the DHSC to find out when this might happen – but it’s a huge operation to clean up everything nationwide, so please be patient with them and with us while the sites are cleaned.

The latest updates on COVID-19 testing in Cumbria will be posted on the Cumbria County Council website.
