You can now reserve the OnePlus 10T 5G in the US by pre-ordering the handset from OnePlus.com, Amazon, and Best Buy. While you can be sure you’ll get one of these phones starting today, September 1, they won’t start shipping until September 28.

If you order directly from the OnePlus website before September 8, you’ll be eligible for a free memory upgrade to 16GB of memory and 256GB of storage for the same price as the model with 8GB of memory and 128GB of storage ($649 or 12 payments $54.09 monthly). If you are not interested in this free upgrade, another choice would be to accept a free box and an 80W car char.

Pre-order the OnePlus 10T 5G and get a free memory and storage upgrade

After September 8, when you order the unit with 16GB of memory and 256GB of storage from OnePlus.com, you’ll receive the free case and car charger, but you’ll receive bupkis if you order the base model. .

Amazon and Best Buy will give you the free memory upgrade during the entire pre-order period from September 1 to September 28. Again, that means you’ll get the OnePlus 10T with 16GB of memory and 256GB of storage for $649 instead of paying $749 for the upgrade.

More exciting, if you are a AT&T subscriber, is that the OnePlus 10T 5G is the first OnePlus phone certified to work with AT&T 5G. This means that the phone will provide both 4G LTE and 5G to subscribers of the three major wireless service providers in the United States: Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T. The OnePlus 10T also supports 5G on Bell and Telus in Canada, but only offers 4G support for Rogers and Freedom customers.

The OnePlus 10T 5G is available in Moonstone Black and Jade Green. The phone offers a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with 1080 x 2412 resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. The aspect ratio weighs in at 20.1:9 for a taller and thinner display. Qualcomm’s current high-end Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset is under the hood and Android 12 comes pre-installed. The triple camera array on the back includes a 50MP camera sensor, a 16MP sensor (for the ultra-wide-angle camera), and a 2MP macro sensor for extreme close-ups. There’s a front-facing 16MP selfie snapper.

Take advantage of the trade-in offer on the OnePlus site and you could end up paying less than $400 before taxes

Biometric security features include an under-display fingerprint scanner and 2D face unlock which isn’t as secure as Face ID (which uses 3D depth images). This means that a 2D image, such as a photograph of your face, can be used to unlock the device. With an IP54 rating, the OnePlus 10T 5G offers protection against small amounts of dust and light rain.

A 4800mAh battery keeps the lights on and can recharge as fast as 125W using the SUPERVOOC Endurance Edition charger. This provides a full day of power in just 10 minutes while doubling component life from 800 to 1,600 charges. And yes, the power supply comes in the box with the phone.

If you take advantage of the free memory upgrade, you can score a device with 16GB of memory and 256GB of storage for just $649 and on the OnePlus.com website, you can get up to $250 off. instant credit on your new handset.

OnePlus has certainly come a long way since the launch of the OnePlus One in April 2014. As a new company at the time, OnePlus only sold its phones to those who got an invitation to buy the device. This was done so that the company could more easily manage supply and demand and prevent OnePlus from building too many phones. Stock busting is often the kiss of death for a new phone maker.

And now we’re over eight years later and OnePlus is still going strong.

When Apple unveils the iPhone 14 lineup in a week and a half – the company has set a September 7 date for its next product launch – we expect to welcome four new models to the iPhone lineup. But it also marks the end of the road for a particular type of iPhone.

September’s Apple event is sure to mark the end of the mini, first introduced as part of the iPhone 12 lineup two years ago. And if Apple’s phone sales reports are any indication – remember that the company doesn’t break down its sales by device – few people are going to shed too many tears at the end of the mini.

Visa Chairman and CEO Al Kelly talks about the payments landscape in Africa and its future in this interview with Temitayo Jaiyeola

How do you see Africa’s role in the global economy?

Africa is home to both the world’s youngest population and six of the world’s 10 fastest growing economies, two factors that will have an increasingly transformative effect on the world’s economic and social trajectory. As more and more people connect to the internet and gain mobile connectivity, these two changes accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic Africa will continue to experience significant economic and digital transformation. All this shows the growing role of Africa in the global economy.

For Visa, Africa is at the heart of our long-term growth strategy. Over the years, we have focused our efforts on bringing buyers and sellers across the continent into digital commerce. Visa serves each of the 54 African countries from 11 offices, including a new office in the Democratic Republic of Congo that officially opened this week. We have a truly local business with teams across the continent, supporting public and private sector partners. Today, there are more than 128 million Visa cards in Africa and almost two million points of sale accepting Visa payments.

Even so, cash remains a primary payment option for millions of people on the continent, leaving many people outside the formal financial system and without the kind of security and reliability that digital payments provide. We see tremendous opportunity, especially in rural communities, to bring secure, reliable and convenient digital payments to commerce on the continent. We are committed to reaching the millions of consumers and merchants who lack access to the digital economy, welcoming more people into the financial ecosystem, and supporting greater prosperity in the process.

What is your assessment of the health of the fintech ecosystem in Africa?

Innovation in fintech is key to unlocking sustainable development in sub-Saharan Africa, and we have seen substantial growth in the fintech ecosystem. In the first half of 2022 alone, African tech start-ups raised nearly $3 billion. Companies from the continent are building an enviable reputation for innovation in the global fintech industry. The potential is simply enormous.

We’ve seen some of this potential firsthand through partnerships all around the payments ecosystem. For example, our collaboration with Safaricom, Africa’s leading mobile money network, already enables more than 24 million M-PESA users to shop online at Visa merchants around the world.

In Nigeria, we are working with Interswitch to strengthen and improve our combined service offering and promote new solutions and products to customers and partners in Nigeria and other African markets. Paga, another African fintech based in Lagos, has a reach across SSA that will enable account holders to transact anywhere Visa is accepted and help small business owners digitize their business through payments, point of sale and access to credit, all via mobile. device.

We remain committed to accelerating the growth of the African ecosystem and continue to strive to be the partner of choice for new fintechs and innovators.

What future for payments in Africa?

More consumers in Africa are embracing digital payments, including through e-commerce, contactless payments and mobile money. Businesses of all sizes have had to adapt to this clear and certain shift in consumer preferences, and we expect this trend to continue. We are excited to bring transformative digital technologies such as contactless payments to West Africa and have seen an encouraging response in markets like Ghana.

Another area we look closely at is the movement of money across borders. These types of transactions can represent financial lifelines for millions of families across Africa, often sent from around the world. Nigeria, for example, is among the top 10 countries in the world to receive remittances. We are working with our partners to expand cross-border remittances via Visa Direct, a service that allows a sender to transfer funds directly to a card or bank account.

Although a degree of uncertainty and unpredictability has characterized the past two years, one thing is clear: the future of money is digital. At Visa, we are preparing to unlock the potential of digital currency for economies and businesses around the world. Rethinking payments and trade more broadly will only further accelerate growth in Africa. We are very optimistic for Africa and Visa is excited to play a part in shaping the continent’s future.

Governments across Africa have implemented policies to close the financial inclusion gap. How can these agendas be supported?

Two out of three people in Africa do not have a bank account, yet almost half of all mobile money users in the world live on the continent. Despite solid progress, these kinds of stubborn disparities in access to financial services persist.

We believe the greatest impact comes from public/private partnerships. We are committed to working with governments to help move economies and societies forward. Since the onset of the pandemic, we have had many examples of successful collaboration launching several community programs to help individuals and small businesses access the digital economy.

Recently, we partnered with Sotra, the national transport company of Ivory Coast, to enable digital payments for transit. Through our collaboration with Bizzoly, O-City and Ecobank in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Visa will digitize payments for 1,000 buses from the DRC’s national bus company (Transco).

Beyond partnerships, and as part of our mission to foster equitable access for everyone everywhere, we have supported financial inclusion efforts by providing grants to organizations across Africa through the Visa Foundation . We also launched several global initiatives such as She’s Next, to support women business owners, and Practical Money and Business Skills, a financial literacy program that has helped millions of consumers, small business owners and entrepreneurs. potential to meet their main financial challenges.

Much more broadly, digital payments in themselves offer a lot to businesses and economies. Studies show that switching to digital payments increases GDP by 1% for countries with mature economies and up to 3% for emerging economies. For small businesses, which form the bedrock of communities across Africa, according to a conservative estimate, going digital means a 17% increase in revenue. Simply enabling digital payments goes a long way toward creating greater prosperity for all participants in the digital economy.

How is your company enabling the growth of innovation across the continent?

We continue to invest in innovation through partnerships, products and solutions, and our own company. In April, we opened our first African innovation studio in Nairobi, Kenya to serve the entire region. The studio was specifically designed to help Visa customers and partners collaborate, co-create and explore both the future of commerce and the impact of new technologies on how Africans shop, pay and get paid. The Innovation Studio is just one of the most recent achievements of our company’s larger vision and purpose: to advance digital commerce and give people, businesses and economies access to financial services they need to thrive.

We have also invested in future innovators through our Visa Everywhere initiative, a global innovation program and competition for start-ups and fintech companies. In June this year, more than 1,300 applicants from across Central Europe, the Middle East and Africa competed and two Nigerian start-ups made it to the last five. Tech-focused agricultural start-up, ThriveAgric, a Nigerian company, was the overall winner and CarePAY, another Nigerian start-up, took home the People’s Favorite award.

The new school year kicked off this week for the more than 3,300 students at Oak Park-River Forest High School with a “Pride Pack” theme and new cell phone rules – among other changes, adjustments and more.

Freshmen started on Monday, and the first day for all other classes was Tuesday.

“Faculty, staff and administration are thrilled to usher in the new school year,” said Lynda Parker, Deputy/Principal Superintendent.

Along with a new school year, the school will see a number of new rules, starting with mobile phones

“All students will silence and store their cell phones in the teaching spaces of the telephone house that has been provided in each classroom,” Parker wrote in her welcome letter to families in July.

Parker said the change aligns with current research on educational best practices as well as current research on the effects of cellphones on academic achievement, social and emotional well-being, and mental health in adolescents.

His back-to-school letter also stressed that students will be required to wear their ID card at chest level on their person.

“These changes are intended to optimize the learning experience for all students and to help staff across the building easily identify our students,” Parker said.

School spokeswoman Karin Sullivan told Pioneer Press in an email that there were 18 new long-term teachers/substitute teachers this school year.

“We have four new courses this year: Entertainment Arts, Voice Communication, English for Career and College Readiness, and Physics-Chemistry A,” Sullivan said.

Entertainment Arts is described as providing hands-on experience with stop-motion, motion graphics and experimental media, while Voice Communication is described as helping students understand and apply the principles of communication in their own interpersonal discourse , intrapersonal, group and public.

English for Career and College Readiness is described as preparing students for college-level reading and writing across the curriculum, while Physics-Chemistry A is described as helping students build their own understanding of major scientific ideas by consistently practicing the scientific process.

“The board is discussing but has not approved two major capital projects,” Sullivan said of what may happen to the high school.

One project is a potential sports field redesign, as the school’s agreement with neighboring Concordia University to use its track expires in the spring of 2024. The other project stems from the five-phase Imagine Oak Park master plan and River Forest High School, the district guide. for capital projects.

“The second phase of Imagine OPRF is focused on the construction of a new four-story/five-level physical education and athletics wing including a full basement at the southeast corner (Scoville and Lake) of the building,” according to the facilities master plan on the school’s website.

According to the plan, the wing would include physical education classrooms, physical education and athletics offices, physical education equipment storage, and a conference room; improvements to the Performing Arts Green Room; changing rooms for all genders and an elevator that meets accessibility requirements.

Other equipment is also listed.

The school is the only one in Oak Park and River Forest School District 200, serving the towns of Oak Park and River Forest. Officials say district leaders are continuing to explore the possibility of using a block schedule or starting the school day later.

“We will take the first part of the 2022-23 school year to gather feedback on a few bell schedule options and make a final decision in January 2023,” said Laurie Fiorenza, assistant superintendent for student learning, in a May 3 letter to SD200. families and students.

She explained that waiting to make the decision ensures that families and students have time to plan if there is a change to the current bell schedule. The current school day begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 3:11 p.m. Monday to Friday – except Wednesdays for late arrivals, where the school day begins at 9:12 a.m.

Fall 2022 will also mark a return to school campus tours for prospective families.

“A guided tour of the OPRFHS campus is intended to provide a general overview and history of the school facilities for prospective families. LAHORE: Contrary to prosecution claims that police have yet to retrieve Shahbaz Gill’s mobile phone to obtain vital camera information and valuable data, various colleagues of the imprisoned PTI stalwart have stated emphatically that said gadget had actually been seized at the time of his arrest.

One of the most widely used and sold consumer technologies, these smart phones and the secrets they hide can be extremely intriguing. An insight into the political history of Pakistan and these wireless cellphones shows that on May 16, 2022, Shahbaz Gill claimed that his party leader Imran Khan’s cellphones were also stolen from Sialkot airport after speaking at a rally.

In one of his tweets, Gill also referenced former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s video, in which he revealed he had recorded a video, in which he named everyone involved in the plot. alleged to be plotting his murder.

Gill had claimed that the video Imran referred to was not on the stolen phones. History tells us that on November 23, 2011, Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, Husain Haqqani, had to resign following a scam that revealed the power struggle between the government led by Asif Zardari and the army.

The Pakistani Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) filed a petition with the Supreme Court, seeking an investigation into the Memogate scandal in November 2011, and on January 9, 2012, Nawaz Sharif appeared personally before the Judiciary Committee probing the issue. .

A Pakistani businessman, Mansoor Ijaz, wrote an article in the “Financial Times” in October 2011, drawing public attention to the Memogate affair. The memo, whose existence was at first doubted, was published in November and led to the resignation of Ambassador Haqqani.

Mansoor had alleged that his longtime friend Haqqani had asked him to deliver a confidential note to US Army Chief Admiral Mike Mullen asking for help from Washington DC. The ‘Washington Post’ wrote: ‘This tension has been crystallized by the swirling controversy, which centers on a Pakistani-American businessman’s claim that Haqqani orchestrated a memo requesting US assistance to diminish the power of the army after the American raid that killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan.

If you receive robocalls every day, you’re not alone. These pesky calls keep coming, even though the government has tried to stop them. But there are steps you can take to help silence your phone.

It is estimated that four billion robocalls arrive on our phones every year. Many of them call for dollars – scammers trying to trick us into handing over our money. Daniel Unger lost $11,000 after a bot caller spoofed his bank’s phone number, tricking him into thinking his bank was calling and asking him to reset his password.

“It’s embarrassing to realize that all you had to do was hang up or not answer the phone,” Unger said. “But the way they spoofed it, the way they imitated the phone call, I never got over it in my head, so mentally they got me.”

YouMail CEO Alex Quilici has been battling robocalls for years.

“The economics of robocalls is that it’s so cheap to make a million calls that you don’t have to have a lot of people answering to make a profit,” Quilici said.

He says the federal government has tried to help — last summer it started requiring cellphone carriers to block calls from spoofed numbers. Quilici says it works, but it doesn’t entirely solve the problem.

“If I’m a bad guy, I can just go and get a million real phone numbers that an operator will say, ‘Yeah, that’s really my number,'” he explained. “We are already seeing this happening on a large scale. So the bad guys actually look like the good guys.

But Quilici says there are things you can do to help reduce robocalls. First of all, if an unknown number appears on your phone, do not answer. If he leaves a voicemail, do not return the call.

And if you’re answering a number you recognize, perhaps from your bank, make sure the number hasn’t been spoofed.

“Just because it says it’s Citibank doesn’t mean it’s Citibank,” Quilici said. “Go to the website, look at your credit card, call this number and say, ‘Hey, I just got a call from you, is that really you?'”

Finally, install an app designed to block robocalls. The Quilici company, YouMail, has one that you can download for free. There are others on the market too, like Robokiller and Nomorobo. Quilici says YouMail stops about 80% of bad calls.

And there’s a collective benefit to using an app: it helps put calling bots out of business. Companies like YouMail report all robocall numbers they collect to law enforcement.

“So the more consumers who have apps like ours, the faster the bad guys are caught,” Quilici said.

Quilici thinks we’ll see a significant drop in robocalls over the next few years. But he expects to see an increase in spam. His hope is that spam detection will soon be integrated into smartphones, so that we won’t even see calls or texts. Instead, they will be automatically blocked, like most spam.

According to the story, just six weeks before the original iPhone was released, CEO Steve Jobs got upset that the plastic screen of the prototype device he was using had been scratched. A last minute change therefore saw Apple switch to glass.

And not just any glass, but Gorilla Glass. This chemically strengthened glass was created by Corning and has since become a staple in the smartphone market. Let’s first look at a bit of history before we get to the era of smartphones.

Corning got its start in the mid-19th century, manufacturing lenses for railroad signal lights and later car headlights. He made the glass for Thomas Edison’s light bulb. In 1915, she created Pyrex kitchen utensils. Then, in the 1960s, he began making windows for NASA spacecraft, including the Space Shuttle. Fast forward to 2006 and we come to the fateful meeting between Apple and Corning.

Plastic screens were the norm back then, but Apple cares too much about aesthetics to let a device get scratched. More than that, the iPhone was a touchscreen phone, the screen was everything and it had to be protected.

This was also true for other smartphones as they transitioned from keyboards and keypads to touchscreens. The first iPhones used Gorilla Glass, as did the T-Mobile G1, the very first Android phone.

Touch phones running just about every operating system on earth have also adopted Corning’s glass. From the small Samsung Corby to the mighty i8910 Omnia HD. From the elegant LG KM900 Arena to the unique LG BL40 New Chocolate.

It was also on the Nokia X6 (now that the Finns were moving away from resistive touch), as well as the Motorola Droid/Milestsone, the rugged Sonim XP3.20 Quest and even the LG GD910 watch phone (we’ll talk about wearables later ). And those are just a few of the phones from 2009.

In 2010, about 20% of cell phones were equipped with Gorilla Glass, or some 200 million devices. In 2012, the sequel was announced – sheets of Gorilla Glass 2 could be 20% thinner while remaining just as sturdy.

GG2 was used by the likes of the Galaxy S III and the camera-turned-Galaxy Camera GC100 phone. Samsung has also used it on its Windows Phone handset, the Ativ S, as has HTC on the creatively named Windows Phone 8X.

By now Nokia had become a fan of glass and it featured on the Lumia 920. Other influential phones to use GG2 include the Oppo Find 5 and LG Optimus G. Glass was even suitable for 3D screens as seen. sees on the Optimus 3D Max. .

Gorilla Glass 3 arrived in 2013, a completely new formulation. It was more scratch resistant and the scratches it received were less noticeable thanks to something Corning called “Native Damage Resistance”.

To demonstrate this at MWC, Corning dropped a 135g steel ball onto a piece of normal and GG3 glass. The normal glass cracked, so it was replaced with aluminum foil. Dropping the ball again left a dent in the aluminum, but Gorilla Glass 3 survived unscathed.

Sequels for some familiar faces used GG3. Samsung’s Galaxy S4, Note3 and S4 zoom, for example. The affordable Moto G, its high-end sibling Moto X (both made by Google-owned Motorola) and the LG Nexus 5.

There was also the Nokia Lumia 1020 and the big Lumia 1320 with its 6″ screen (remember it was 16:9 back then, this thing was 85.9mm wide and 164.2mm tall high).

Gorilla Glass 3 was one of the most successful formulations for Corning and it is still used to this day, here are some modern devices. The Pixel 6a uses it for its display. The Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro uses it for its back. Interestingly, the Motorola Edge 30 Pro uses GG3 for the front and GG5 for the rear. It is still used by a rugged Sonim phone and the Ulefone Power Armor 14 Pro.

We haven’t mentioned Apple in a while, what happened? With the iPhone 5 in 2012, the company stopped using the “Gorilla Glass” brand name and started calling it “ion-strengthened glass.” It was still a Corning product.

Cupertino actually tried to get away from the glass around this point. He was working with GT Advanced, a company that made sapphire crystal displays for the Apple Watch. These were also used to protect the Touch ID camera and fingerprint readers. But Apple wanted bigger sheets, which could cover the screen of iPhones. Unfortunately, the GT Advanced went bankrupt trying to develop the technology to make it possible. Sapphire crystal has been used on some phones, but none have the sales volume of iPhones. It’s mostly a watch thing.

It’s a nice transition to Gorilla Glass SR+, a 2016 glass designed specifically for wearables. It offered better damage resistance and reduced screen glare compared to “alternative luxury cover materials”.

Then in 2018 came Gorilla Glass DX and DX+, improved glasses for wearables. According to Corning, it reduced glare by 75%, which improved screen contrast by 50%. This was vital for smartwatches, which only had tiny batteries to power their screens. The difference between the DX and the DX+ was that the plus model was harder.

A few years later, Corning reintroduced Gorilla Glass DX and DX+ as protection for camera lenses. Scratch resistance and improved optical performance are just as important for cameras as they are for watches. DX and DX+ let in 98% of light while reducing glare (which can cause reflections in photos).

Corning’s latest formulations are Gorilla Glass Victus and Victus+ (it stopped with the numbered versions after 6). Based on official tests, a smartphone with Victus glass on the front can survive a 2m (6.5ft) drop onto concrete and still have a functional screen. It also boasted of superior scratch resistance compared to previous generations.

Victus and Victus+ are now the norm for flagships – the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, Asus Zenfone 9, Google Pixel 6 Pro, Xiaomi 12S Ultra, Sony Xperia 1 IV, Galaxy Xcover 6 Pro, OnePlus 10 Pro, Oppo Find X5 Pro and many others others.

Corning also made Gorilla Glass for tablets and even laptops. The company has a long history of making glass for larger screens like TVs (though it’s not marketed as “Gorilla Glass”).

Corning’s next challenge is foldable phones – some use “ultra-thin glass” (UTG), which is one-third the thickness of a human hair. It’s so thin it can bend, unlike what glass normally does. But making it durable enough for hundreds of daily folding and unfolding cycles is no small feat. Still, it’s an important issue to address as foldables are seen by some as the future of smartphones.

In 2020, Corning’s Gorilla Glass was featured on 8 billion devices created by more than 45 OEMs. It was a smash hit, considering the original GG was hastily assembled, developed in just 4 months. It has gone through many iterations and improvements and the reason it was needed in the first place has not gone away.
