Cats in the Pros: Cal Stevenson becomes the 90th wildcat in MLB history

TUCSON, Ariz.— Former Arizona Baseball outfielder Cal Stevenson made his Major League debut for the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday, becoming the 90th Wildcat in MLB history.

Stevenson was called up from the Las Vegas Triple-A on Wednesday morning and started in center field for the A’s later in the afternoon, ninth at bat.

He collected his first Major League hit in the bottom of the sixth inning, a field single at shortstop, and scored his first career run in the bottom of the seventh after drawing a first step.

Stevenson finished the day 1-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and a walk.

During two seasons with the Wildcats in 2017 and 2018, Stevenson hit .302 with 108 runs scored, 28 extra hits and 56 RBIs. As a junior in 2017, he led the Pac-12 in runs scored and walks.

Stevenson was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 10th round of the 2018 MLB Draft and spent time in the Houston and Tampa Bay organizations before being traded to Oakland in July 2022.
