10 Best VPN for Android (updated in April 2024) (1)

In a hurry? Here’s the best VPN for Android in 2024:

  • 🥇ExpressVPN: It comes with a super intuitive Android VPN app, and it works with 100+ streaming services. In addition, it allows torrenting on servers in 100+ countries, it has industry-leading security and privacy tools, and it provides the fastest speeds on the market. Plus, it also backs all plans with a risk-free 30-day money-back guarantee.

Using a VPN on Android comes with tons of perks — you can access your favorite streaming content when traveling abroad, you can secure your P2P downloads, and you can protect your web traffic from malicious actors.

That said, many VPNs are not a good fit for Android users. They either don’t have native Android apps, or their apps are just hard to use. In addition, many VPNs have slow speeds or don’t work well with streaming services.

So I put together a list of Android VPNs that actually provide great value. I’ve been using VPNs while traveling for 10+ years, and all of the providers mentioned in this article have intuitive Android apps, are good for streaming, and provide good speeds (ExpressVPN is my #1 pick).

Quick Look at the Best VPNs for Android in 2024:

  • 🥇 1. ExpressVPN — Best VPN for Android in 2024.
  • 🥈 2. Surfshark — Excellent Android VPN for streaming and beginners.
  • 🥉 3. CyberGhost VPN — Great streaming VPN with huge server network.
  • 4. NordVPN — Good Android VPN for security.
  • 5. Private Internet Access — Great user-friendly Android VPN with strong privacy features.
  • 6. VPNs #6 to #10.
  • 7. Comparison of the Best VPNs for Android in 2024.

ExpressVPN definitely has the best Android VPN app on the market. The provider has a very intuitive app, it comes with a huge server network, it provides excellent streaming and torrenting support, and it’s super secure.

I really love how user-friendly the provider’s Android app is. It comes with a quick-connect tool that automatically connects you to the fastest server, and all features and settings come with helpful explanations. Plus, you get access to Shortcuts, which is a tool that lets you create 1-click shortcuts for apps and sites that show up on your connection screen after you connect to the VPN — for example, I always use Shortcuts to secure my access to Netflix and my bank’s site when I travel.

ExpressVPN is also very good for streaming and torrenting. That’s because it works with 100+ streaming platforms, including top ones like Netflix (it’s actually the best Netflix VPN on the market), Disney+, and Max, so you get excellent variety. On top of that, it also allows torrenting on all of its servers, which is really convenient.

And the provider has a huge network, with servers in 100+ countries. This makes it super simple to connect to nearby servers to get the fastest speeds. And speaking of speeds, ExpressVPN is the fastest Android VPN on the market — in my tests, it always provided me with blazing-fast browsing and streaming speeds on both nearby and distant servers.

And ExpressVPN is also one of the best Android VPNs for security. It has a strict no-logs policy that has been independently audited, and it also comes with advanced features, such as RAM-only servers (every server reset wipes all data), full leak protection, and perfect forward secrecy, which changes the encryption key for each VPN session.

Also, I really like how feature-rich the provider’s Android app is — it comes with split-tunneling (lets you choose which apps use and don’t use the VPN), a free built-in password manager called ExpressVPN Keys, and Advanced Protection, which blocks ads, maliciou sites, and even adult websites.

ExpressVPN is affordable, with plans starting at $6.67/month. It’s pricier when compared to other Android VPNs, but I still think the money is worth it since this VPN provides excellent value. Plus, it backs all plans with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

surfshark.com

Surfshark provides very good streaming support via its Android app. The VPN service is compatible with 100+ streaming services, including top ones like Netflix and BBC iPlayer. What’s more, the provider’s Android app has a tool that spoofs your GPS data — it matches it to your VPN IP address, which makes it much harder for mobile streaming apps to detect and block your VPN connection.

I also really like how easy-to-use the provider's VPN app is — the interface is very simple to navigate, and it doesn’t take more than 4–5 seconds to find and connect to a VPN server. What’s more, the VPN allows unlimited simultaneous connections, meaning you can use it on as many Android devices as you want.

This is also one of the most secure and feature-rich VPN services for Android. It has an audited no-logs policy, RAM-only servers, and perfect forward secrecy. In addition, it comes with split-tunneling, an ad blocker, and double VPN servers (add an extra layer of encryption to the VPN connection). The provider’s Android app also has IP Rotator, which regularly changes your VPN IP to provide extra privacy — and it does this without disconnecting you from the VPN server.

Surfshark also has a really large server network, just like ExpressVPN — it comes with 3200+ servers in 95+ countries. And it also performed really well in my speed tests, as it maintained fast speeds for browsing, online gaming, and streaming on both nearby and distant servers.

And you also get excellent P2P support, as the VPN allows torrenting on all of its servers. So, it’s extremely simple to torrent on a nearby server that’s not overcrowded to get the fastest download speeds.

Surfshark is very affordable, with plans starting at $2.29/month. In addition, it also backs all plans with a 30-day money-back guarantee— even better, the refund policy is risk-free, meaning you don’t need to meet any requirements to qualify for it.

cyberghostvpn.com

CyberGhost VPN comes with very good streaming support since it works with 50+ streaming platforms. It does this via 100+ dedicated streaming servers that are located in 20+ countries — the servers are optimized to refresh their IPs very fast, so that streaming services have a harder time detecting and blocking them. The VPN is also great for Netflix, as it’s compatible with 15+ libraries, including top ones like Netflix US and Netflix UK.

And Android users also get access to a really large server network, numbering 10000+ servers in 95+ countries. Thanks to this, the VPN also provides very good speeds — in my tests, websites and HD videos always loaded very fast, and I never experienced high ping while playing online games.

The provider’s Android app also comes with split-tunneling and an ad blocker (called Content Blocker). This is great, though CyberGhost VPN’s Content Blocker isn’t as great as ExpressVPN and Surfshark’s ad blocking features — that’s because Content Blocker only manages to block around 50% of ads on a web page (ExpressVPN and Surfshark both block almost all ads).

And CyberGhost VPN also provides very good security and privacy. It uses RAM-only servers and perfect forward secrecy, it has good leak protection (and it never leaked my data in my tests), and it has a no-logs policy that has passed an independent security audit.

And I also think the provider has a user-friendly app for Android devices — the interface is simple to navigate with your finger, the design is really responsive, and all settings and features come with quick explanations.

CyberGhost VPN has plans that start at $2.03/month, so it’s pretty cheap. It provides a generous 45-day money-back guarantee for all of its long-term plans. However, it only backs its shortest plan with a 14-day refund policy.

NordVPN is among the best Android VPNs for privacy and security. It comes with a strict no-logs policy that has passed an independent security audit, and it also comes with advanced tools, including full leak protection, RAM-only servers, and perfect forward secrecy. And it has double VPN servers as well.

I really like the provider’s Threat Protection Lite feature, which blocks ads and shady sites. In my tests, it blocked ads just as well as ExpressVPN and Surfshark’s ad blocking tools. And when I tested the tool with unsecured HTTP websites, it always successfully stopped me from accessing them.

You also get access to a data breach monitoring tool on Android, called Dark Web Monitor. The feature alerts you if your NordVPN account credentials are compromised — so if you use the same login details for other accounts, you can use this feature to keep an eye on them.

NordVPN provides access to a great server network, as it has 6000+ servers in 110+ countries. The VPN provides fast speeds for all online activities on both nearby and distant servers, and it also supports torrenting on P2P servers in 80+ countries.

Finally, this VPN is great for streaming on your Android phone as well. It doesn’t say how many streaming services it works with, but its support reps confirmed the VPN is compatible with top platforms like Netflix and Disney+.

NordVPN comes with tier-based subscriptions, whose pricing starts at $3.69/month. The VPN provider also backs all purchases with a risk-free 30-day money-back guarantee.

Bottom Line: NordVPN is one of the best Android VPNs for securing your data, as it provides access to advanced security tools and useful extras (such as a data breach monitoring tool). It also has a good server network, provides fast speeds, and is great for streaming. The provider backs all plans with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Private Internet Access (PIA) is one of the best Android VPN services for privacy. The provider has a strict no-logs policy that has been independently audited, and which has also been proven true in court on several occasions. What’s more, all of the provider’s apps (including the Android app) are open-source, which means anyone can inspect the code for security issues.

Plus, I like how this provider has one of the most intuitive Android VPN apps on the market. The interface is very simple to navigate, there’s a quick-connect tool, and it’s super simple to find all of the settings and features you want to change. What’s more, the provider lets you connect unlimited devices, which is perfect for large families.

You get great streaming support too, as the VPN works with 20+ streaming services. It’s compatible with top platforms like Netflix and BBC iPlayer, which is great — but I still think ExpressVPN and Surfshark are much better for streaming, as they both work with 100+ streaming platforms.

Other than that, PIA has servers in 90+ countries and allows torrenting on all of them. The provider also supports port forwarding, which lets you connect to more peers to get faster speeds — in my tests, this feature increased my download speeds by about 10%.

Private Internet Access comes with super affordable prices, which start as low as $2.03/month. On top of that, it also backs each purchase with a risk-free 30-day money-back guarantee.

Bottom Line: Private Internet Access is very good for securing your privacy on Android, as its app is open-source, and the provider’s no-logs policy has been confirmed multiple times. The VPN’s mobile app is also very intuitive, and it comes with good streaming and P2P support, as well as servers in tons of countries. The provider backs all purchases with a 30-day refund.

Proton VPN is the best free VPN option on Android, as its free VPN plan comes with unlimited data. In addition, the free plan also includes access to excellent security and privacy tools — open-source and audited apps (including the Android app), full leak protection, perfect forward secrecy, and full-disk encryption, which keeps all data on a server secure even if it’s compromised.

The provider’s free VPN plan also includes access to really good speeds — in my tests, I maintained smooth browsing speeds, and I never experienced noticeable lag while playing online games.

That said, the free VPN plan has some limitations. It only lets you use servers in 5 countries, it doesn’t support streaming and torrenting, and it limits you to 1 device.

The paid version provides access to more perks on Android — 4000+ servers in 80+ countries, support for up to 10 devices, compatibility with 40+ streaming services, and access to NetShield (a really good ad blocker).

Proton VPN’s paid version starts at $4.99/month, which is pretty affordable. The provider also has a 30-day refund policy, but keep in mind it’s prorated.

Bottom Line: Proton VPN comes with the best free VPN plan on Android since it supports unlimited data. It also comes with strong security and privacy tools, and great speeds. Upgrading to the paid version unlocks a large server network, great streaming support, and a very good ad blocker. The provider’s paid version is backed by a prorated 30-day refund policy.

PureVPN works really well in restrictive countries like China and Russia, as it provides obfuscation to hide your VPN traffic and avoid VPN connection blocks. I can personally confirm that the VPN works without issues in China, as I use it very often when I travel there.

The VPN also provides access to a huge server network of 6000+ servers in 65+ countries. This makes it simple to get good speeds because you can avoid overcrowded servers and use nearby server locations.

The provider also works with 10+ streaming platforms, including Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+. This is good, though I think you get much better variety with ExpressVPN and Surfshark, as they both work with 100+ streaming services.

I also like how the provider’s Android app comes with split-tunneling and Shortcuts. I really like the Shortcuts feature, as it allows you to set up customized connections to specific streaming sites, such as Netflix and BBC iPlayer.

PureVPN has tier-based subscriptions and prices that start at $2.11/month. I think the provider is really affordable and offers good value — plus, I like how it has a 31-day refund policy.

Bottom Line: PureVPN is among the best Android VPNs for users in restrictive countries, as the provider works without issues in places like China and Russia. It also has a really large server network, it provides good streaming support, and its Android client comes with split-tunneling. The provider backs all plans with a 31-day money-back guarantee.

PrivateVPN has one of the most user-friendly Android VPN apps on the market. The app design is extremely minimalistic, so new users won’t feel overwhelmed — plus, this makes it really easy to find and connect to servers, and also change all the settings you want.

While the VPN’s mobile app is user-friendly, it does lack important extras. For example, it doesn’t come with split-tunneling, a tool that many other Android VPNs (like ExpressVPN and Surfshark) provide access to.

On the plus side, the VPN also provides very good speeds — I was always able to load sites and HD videos instantly in my tests. This is because the VPN has 200+ servers in 60+ countries, so it’s pretty easy to use nearby servers for fast speeds.

And PrivateVPN is pretty good for streaming too. It doesn’t say how many streaming services it works with, but its reps confirmed that the VPN works with top platforms like Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and Amazon Prime Video.

PrivateVPN is super affordable, with prices starting at just $2.00/month. In addition, the provider also backs all purchases with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Bottom Line: PrivateVPN comes with a minimalistic app for your Android device — the interface is super easy to navigate, and most settings have helpful explanations. The provider also has good speeds and great streaming support, but it’s missing split-tunneling. It also backs all plans with a 30-day refund.

IPVanish’s app for your Android device is really simple to navigate — it has a search field to help you instantly find your desired server locations, it comes with a quick-connect tool, and its settings come with easy-to-understand explanations. Also, the provider allows an unlimited number of simultaneous connections.

The provider is also great for torrenting, as it allows P2P traffic on all of its servers — a total of 2400+ servers in 50+ countries, which is pretty good. It also provides good download speeds, as it usually took me just 10 minutes to torrent a 2 GB file.

The VPN service is also decent for streaming, as it works with top services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. Sadly, it’s not compatible with other popular platforms, including Max and YouTube TV — if that’s a deal-breaker for you, consider getting ExpressVPN or Surfshark instead, as they both work with 100+ streaming sites.

IPVanish has affordable prices that start at $2.75/month. It also comes with a 30-day refund policy, but it only applies to its long-term plans.

Bottom Line: IPVanish has a really intuitive app for Android mobile devices that makes it very simple to connect to servers. It also supports torrenting on 2400+ servers in 50+ countries, it comes with good download speeds, and it works with most top streaming services. The provider also backs all long-term plans with a 30-day refund policy.

Astrill VPN is a good option for people in restrictive countries —whether they live in such places, or are just traveling through there. That’s because this provider consistently circumvents government censorship in countries like China, Russia, and Turkey, for instance.

The VPN also has decent streaming and torrenting support. It works with top services like Netflix, Max, and YouTube TV, and it also allows P2P downloads on servers in 30+ countries.

That said, my biggest complaint is that the provider’s app is missing a kill switch, which is an essential VPN security feature. Top competitors (like ExpressVPN and Surfshark) all come with Android VPN apps that have a kill switch.

Astrill VPN provides good value, but it’s very expensive — its plans start at $12.50/month. What’s more, I also don’t like how this is one of the only Android VPN providers on the market that doesn’t come with a money-back guarantee.

Bottom Line: Astrill VPN is a good option for people in restrictive regions, as this VPN for Android is able to circumvent government censorship without any issues. In addition, it also provides good streaming and torrenting support. The only major issue is that the provider’s app for Android is missing a kill switch. I also don’t like how Astrill VPN lacks a refund policy.

How to Choose the Best VPN for Android in 2024

  • Get a VPN with a dedicated Android app — I only recommend getting a VPN whose app you can download straight from the Google Play store. You shouldn’t need to perform an inconvenient manual setup to use the VPN on your Android devices.
  • Make sure to pick an Android VPN that’s user-friendly — You should only choose a provider whose Android app is very intuitive. It shouldn’t take you more than 5 seconds to find and connect to a VPN server, and the app should also provide helpful explanations for most settings.
  • Go for a VPN with strong security features All of the VPNs I recommend in this article come with industry-standard security features. This includes military-grade encryption, a no-logs policy, a kill switch to prevent data leaks, or DNS leak protection.
  • Select an Android VPN with good streaming and P2P support — It’s best to consider Android VPNs that work with top streaming sites, such as Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and Amazon Prime Video. In addition, you should also only pick an Android VPN app that supports P2P traffic on most of its VPN servers.
  • Choose a VPN that provides fast speeds — When you use a VPN, your original speeds will always slow down due to the added encryption and the distance between your device and the VPN server. But the best VPNs (like the ones on my list) optimize their services to minimize the speed loss, so that it’s barely noticeable.
  • Get an Android VPN that offers good value — I only recommend going for a VPN provider that comes with a large server network, provides access to extras (such as split-tunneling), and has affordable plans. Ideally, the VPN should also come with a generous refund policy.

Why Use a VPN on Your Android Smartphone?

  • Protect your web traffic — VPNs encrypt your internet data, which means they make it 100% unreadable. This way, third parties (like hackers and internet service providers) can’t spy on your online browsing.
  • Secure your privacy — When you use a VPN, it hides your IP address so that only the VPN’s IP address is visible. This prevents anyone from using your IP to track your location.
  • Improve your streaming experience — By hiding your location, VPNs allow you to access streaming sites and content that’s only available in your country when you travel abroad.
  • Enjoy secure torrenting — Torrenting via VPN stops anyone in the torrent swarm (the total number of people downloading and uploading a torrent) from seeing your real IP address. In addition, it also stops your internet service provider (ISP) from seeing and throttling or blocking your P2P traffic.
  • Get a better gaming experience — Gaming with a VPN might lower your ping, as the VPN might route your traffic more efficiently to the gaming server. In addition, using a VPN while gaming will protect you from Distributed-Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks because it will hide your IP address.
  • Stop bandwidth throttling — Normally, your ISP can see your web browsing, so they can selectively slow down your speeds if it thinks you’re using too much data. But a VPN hides that data, which makes it impossible for an ISP to do that.

How to Install and Use a VPN on Your Android Phone

  1. Sign up for a VPN with a good Android app. I recommend ExpressVPN since it has a super easy-to-use Android app, it works with 100+ streaming services, and it provides blazing-fast speeds.
  2. Download the VPN app from the app store. Look up the provider’s app on the Play store, and hit the download button.
  3. Wait for the app to finish installing. The whole process shouldn’t take more than 2 minutes.
  4. Open the app. Then, enter your login credentials to access your account.
  5. Finish setting up the VPN app. Just follow the on-screen instructions to finish the app setup process.
  6. Connect to a server location. Scroll through the provider’s server locations, pick the one you like, wait for the connection to go through, and then start securely surfing the web.

VPNs That I Recommend Avoiding

  • AirVPN — The provider has a native Android VPN client, but it’s really confusing to use, and the design also looks outdated. What’s more, the VPN has slow speeds on distant servers, and it also doesn’t work well with most top streaming platforms.
  • ioloVPN — This VPN comes with an easy-to-use app for Android, but it doesn’t consistently work with top streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. What’s more, the provider’s app is missing a kill switch.
  • Unblock VPN — Unblock VPN doesn’t have a native Android app, so you need to perform an inconvenient manual setup to use the VPN on Android. What’s more, the provider lacks a kill switch,it leaks DNS data, and it doesn’t work with most top streaming platforms.

Frequently Asked Questions

I think the best VPN for Android on the market in 2024 is ExpressVPN. For starters, the provider has a super intuitive Android VPN app that makes it very easy to connect to servers, and which also works with 100+ streaming platforms. In addition, ExpressVPN allows torrenting on all servers, provides high-end security and privacy features, and has the fastest speeds on the market.

There are free VPN services out there, but I usually recommend avoiding them. If you try to use a free Android VPN, you’ll usually deal with annoying limitations — like daily or monthly data caps, lack of streaming or torrenting support, and buggy Android apps, for example.

If you insist on using a free Android VPN, try Proton VPN’s Android app — it allows unlimited data, provides access to very strong security features, and it even has really good speeds. But it limits you to servers in 5 countries, you don’t get streaming and P2P support, and you can only connect 1 device.

This depends on the VPN provider, but most VPNs allow 5–10 simultaneous connections. If you need to secure more than 10 Android devices, consider trying Surfshark since this provider lets you connect unlimited devices.

No, but they allow you to configure manual VPN connections. Though, to do that, you will need access to a VPN server. It’s honestly much easier to just get a VPN provider that has a native app for Android that you can easily download and install from the app store.

Yes, it’s possible. Even if you use the best VPNs for Android on the market, which optimize their services to limit battery drain, you might still experience increased battery usage. I talked with reps from each provider, and I found out that using a VPN while connected to Wi-Fi is likely to increase battery usage by 10–15%. And if you do this on mobile data, battery usage might go up to 20%.

But luckily there are ways to limit battery drain when using an Android VPN. The main thing you should try is using a lightweight protocol, such as WireGuard or IKEv2/IPSec. Additionally, you should shut down background apps when using the VPN, dim the screen’s brightness, and shut down the VPN app when you’re done using it.

In my tests, ExpressVPN provided me with the fastest VPN speeds — I was able to maintain super fast speeds for browsing, streaming, torrenting, and gaming on both nearby and distant servers. This is mostly due to the fact that the provider has servers in 100+ countries, which makes it very simple to use nearby servers to get the fastest speeds.
