Sergio Aguero ruled out for at least three months as Barcelona monitor heart problem

Former Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero will not play for Barcelona for the next three months as the club assess the extent of his heart problems.

Aguero was taken out in the first half against Alaves after suffering from chest pain.

Acting manager Sergi Barjuan said after the game that Aguero was “calm” and will remain in hospital for Tuesday’s Champions League game against Dynamo Kiev.

Inter Milan-Denmark international Christian Eriksen suffered cardiac arrest while playing for his country at the European Championships this summer and has not played since.

Barcelona are taking every precaution with the 33-year-old and issued a statement on Tuesday confirming next steps in his recovery after sport claims that the first tests revealed an arrhythmia, in which the heart beats at an irregular rate.

“The first player of the Sergio Aguero team has undergone a diagnostic and therapeutic process by Dr Josep Brugada. He is not available for selection and over the next three months the effectiveness of the treatment will be evaluated to determine its recovery process.

“The Argentinian was hospitalized for a cardiological evaluation on Saturday following Barca’s game against Alaves in which the Barca striker felt bad in the first half and was replaced before half-time by Philippe Coutinho . “

Aguero spent a decade at City, helping them win the Premier League five times, the League Cup six times and an FA Cup.

Left on a free transfer after his contract with City expired this summer, Aguero joined Barcelona on a two-year contract.
